August 16, 2008 Official Board MarketsChicago-based Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. names Chuck Schott central region vice president of manufacturing for the company’s container division. Schott joined Smurfit-Stone in 1984 as a production employee at the company’s Fargo, N.D., box plant and has served in a variety of sales and sales management roles throughout his career. He most recently served as area sales manager for the container division’s Lake Superior area.
Long-time Ideal employee Al Blue died Aug. 3 at the age of 84. Blue spent 67 years in various leadership positions in the corrugated industry. He worked at Chicago-based Ideal for 30 years. Prior to joining that company, he also held positions at Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. and Lanzit.
Randy Lorenz is promoted to president of MarquipWardUnited (MWU), North and South America. Lorenz has more than 27 years of industry experience and most recently served as vice president of sales for the Phillips, Wis.-based company, which makes corrugating, sheeting and finishing equipment. In his new role, Lorenz will be responsible for all aspects of the business, including new equipment sales, aftermarket sales, customer service, field service, engineering and manufacturing. In addition, he will continue to be responsible for the sheeter product line worldwide, including the new associates, products and U.K. operation of Apollo Sheeters, which was acquired in July.
Rock-Tenn Chairman and CEO Jim Rubright has been selected as this year’s RISI North American CEO of the Year for the forest products industry. Each year, RISI surveys investment analysts and portfolio managers to make nominations for the award based on such criteria as leadership, vision and strategic accomplishment. Once mainly a player in the declining recycled boxboard market, Rock-Tenn, headquartered in Norcross, Ga., has diversified and expanded its product offering through the acquisition of two low-cost mills (plus related converting plants) — Gulf States Paper’s solid bleached sulfate (SBS) board mill in 2005 and Southern Container’s Solvay recycled containerboard mill in March 2008.
