PPC Competition Showcases True Innovators

April 12, 2008 Official Board Markets

All Packaging Co., Aurora, Colo., won the Paperboard Packaging Council’s (PPC) President Award in its 65th National Paperboard Packaging Competition. The company won for its Brain Toniq beverage packaging. The judges said the package’s look differentiates the Brain Toniq’s new brand.

The PPC competition’s Innovation Award goes to Great Western Industries, Dallas, for a promotional mailing carton for Lexus. The judges said the paperboard wallet echoes the Lexus luxury.

The winners were announced earlier this month during the PPC’s annual meeting, held in New Orleans. Each entry can receive a maximum of 10 judging points for each process stage. The entry with the highest number of total points earns the President’s Award.

In recognition of the importance of structural design and technical excellence in a package’s success, the Innovation Award category was created in 1994. This award recognizes outstanding design based upon structural integrity and the application of materials, coatings, laminates, and other processes that aid the superior function of the product.

Only PPC member companies in good standing are eligible to submit entries. They may submit as many as they like. Each entry is submitted in one of 26 categories. Each package is independently judged on its own merit.

The marketer of Brain Toniq, an enhanced beverage in 7-ounce cans, wanted to differentiate this new product from existing sports and energy drinks in the same size can. The multi-pack carton did the job. It stands out in three ways, the judges said:

  • It holds cans in a straight line arrangement that displays a significant billboard and eye-catching decoration.
  • It features an end style that actually wraps around the curve of the two end cans. The structure adds shape and eye appeal that visually separates the brand from other energy drinks. And the carton delivers strength with locking tabs that securely hold the cans in place.
  • The structure, made from SBS board, has enough strength to allow a diecut to further differentiate the brand on the shelf.

The package also addresses distribution economies. It uses groupings of six multi-packs that fit into a standard beverage tray, delivering a primary package with no added cost in distribution.

The competition’s Innovation Award went to a promotional mailing carton for Lexus. It leverages both paperboard structure and decorating to create a premium look that supports the brand. The carton has a wallet-like look and it holds a USB flash drive that a potential Lexus buyer can plug into a computer to specify car options.

The package hits the mark in two ways, the judges said: The structure is strong enough to deliver the USB flash drive through the postal system while exhibiting visual enhancements that say “luxury.” The structure is strong enough to allow 12 pt paperboard with deep embossing. Printing applies a “double bump” of a soft-coat ink, giving a suede-like feel to the surface. Hot stamping compliments the mailer’s luxury look.
