Sam's Club Offers Reusable Tote

September 20, 2008 Official Board Markets

Sam’s Club will offer reusable shopping totes as another option for customers to carry items at all of its 594 locations beginning Oct. 1. Currently, customers bring their own bags or reuse boxes for their purchases. By offering the totes, Sam’s Club estimates it will be able to cut down waste from corrugated containers and other packaging materials by 1.9 million pounds per year. This would mean more than 3,200 pounds less waste per club and translates into 1,800 more recycled material bales per year, because fewer boxes will be given to customers.

"These new reusable bags will give our members an alternative to using the boxes we provide, and help us reach our goal of zero waste," says Greg Johnston, executive vice president, operations, Sam's Club. "We will continue to offer boxes, but believe we can increase the amount of material we recycle and further ensure we are closing that loop."

The polypropylene reusable shopping totes will cost $2.74 for two. Each bag can hold more than 50 pounds of goods. Sam's Club estimates the bags will last approximately five years and members can return them to Sam's Club to be recycled when they need to be replaced.
