Packaging and Serving a Win

Jones Packaging, MeadWestvaco take top honors in National Paperboard Packaging competition.


Jones Packaging, London, Ontario, captured its first President's Award at the National Paperboard Packaging Competition with Nestle's Turtles Package, a package and serving bowl all in one. MeadWestvaco Corp., Glen Allen, Va., brings new life to a relatively static product category with the Electronic Hard Case cigarette carton and claimed the Innovation Award at the competition.

The award winners were announced at the Paperboard Packaging Council SpringQ Meeting in Nashville, Tenn., last month. Now in its 64th year, the competition had a total of 150 entries in 25 distinct categories.

Nestle's Turtles, created for Nestle Canada, blew the competition away with its novel design and ability to not only store and attractively display the product inside, but also allow for easy access and serving of the product, the judges said. The strategy for developing this uniquelAy designed package was to improve brand performance by enhancing its image and functionality. The objective was to increase consumption and attract new buyers of this product. Distinctive tamper tabs, the soft curves in the lid, and the slider sides create a bowl for serving and sharing Turtles. Because the carton is created from SBS board, the package performs well on high-speed lines, has improved graphic reproduction, and presents a clean, fresh look. The Nestle's Turtles package removed the need for plastic containers and overwrap, making it more sustainable as well.

Created for British American Tobacco, the objective for developing the Electronic Hard Case cigarette paperboard carton was for brand enhancement through interactive packaging and long-term usage. What makes this package innovative is its ability to stand out on the shelf — catching the consumer's eyes with the words "Inspired From Within" blinking and scrolling like a news ticker across the front of the carton. To create this effect, MeadWestvaco installed several technologies into the top panel. Inside the lid is an electronic module containing a circuit board, batteries, touch pad and light array. A red button on the top left corner of the package turns the feature on and off. For the initial order, this was hand applied, but automated inserting is possible. The lid and back panel also have a magnetic opening and closing feature.
