Smurfit-Stone Container Corp., Chicago, will temporarily shut down its No. 5 paper machine at its containerboard mill in Hodge, La., beginning Nov. 24 and ending Dec. 11. The machine produces linerboard and its shutdown will mean 80 employees will be laid off during that period. The company will also temporarily shut down its linerboard machine at its Missoula, Mont., containerboard mill until the end of 2008, affecting another 52 employees. It will shut down Nov. 13. The first round of layoffs there began Nov. 10, with the rest expected this week. The machine produces 550 tons of linerboard daily.
