AF&PA Urges Congressional Support

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) supports the U.S. Department of the Interior Minerals Management Service’s (MMS’s) proposal to increase the domestic supply of energy by allowing limited natural gas and oil exploration in three promising areas of the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS).

As much as 22 percent of the energy used to manufacture paper products comes from natural gas, and the industry relies on this clean and efficient energy source more than any other fossil fuel.

“Federal policies restrict natural gas exploration, yet American manufacturers often must use natural gas to achieve environmental standards,” says Juanita D. Duggan, AF&PA president and CEO. “Moreover, even though the debate over climate change has really just begun, it is already clear that emissions reduction goals will drive up natural gas demand for electricity production. Also, further development of alternative fuels, such as cellulosic ethanol and biodiesel, require natural gas for production.” She maintains that offshore exploration lessens America’s reliance on foreign energy and sustains American jobs.
